Dear Streamwood Park District Residents,
The Streamwood Park District completed the renovation of Grow Park, Autumn Chase Park, Ridge Park, and Surrey Woods Park playgrounds in 2018. In 2017, Buchanan, Challenger South, Friendship and Oak Ridge Parks were renovated with new play structures. Also, the Jefferson Park exercise trail renovation is nearly complete.
The playground structures installations that occurred in the 1990’s were not staggered or spread out to plan for a manageable lifecycle replacement schedule. Today, the Park District is challenged with 23% of our parks structures are between 25-30 years old, 34% being between 20-24 years old, 17% being between 15-20 years old, and 26% being between 10-15 years old.
The renovated parks have been spread out among various neighborhoods throughout the community, and no single neighborhood had numerous playgrounds being replaced. The play structures have been replaced with modern play components, consisting of multiple play opportunities that meet all current playground and safety standards, including ADA compliance considerations. The Park District also solicited feedback from the neighborhoods impacted by the plans and asked the residents to vote on the options for the equipment themes and related components.
The Park District has three staff members who have been licensed as Certified Playground Safety Inspectors (CPSI), ensuring that the Park District is regularly monitoring the safety of all play structures; especially the older ones.
We are also seeking alternative revenue sources such as grants to continue our park and playground renovations. One example being a grant application to update Commissioners’ Park (formerly Aquarius Park). The awarding agency will be making decisions late Spring 2019.
The goal of our playground replacement plans are to provide the Streamwood residents with as many new play structures as are economically feasible, with the least amount of disruption to your enjoyment of our parks.
If you have any park safety concerns, please contact the Parks Department at firstname.lastname@example.org, or can call the Parks Hotline at 630.483.3134.
